With Veterans’ Day quickly approaching, here’s a thought: hire a veteran.

This is one of the best ways to say “Thank you for risking your life to save my freedom.” Look at the advantages.

  • They possess essential skills companies look for: leadership, problem-solving and teamwork.
  • The fortitude and resilience veterans have can be brought successfully to civilian work.
  • Businesses hire veterans because they know it’s as sound a business decision.

Secretary of Labor, Tom Perez emphasizes a guiding principle that “we must commit each and every day to serving our veterans as well as they’ve served us.”

In 2012, among all veterans, the unemployment rate for men declined by 1.4% to 6.9%. Gulf War-era II veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, or both had an unemployment rate of 10.9 percent in August 2012.

The rate for female veterans was 8.3% in 2012. The rate for Gulf War-era II female veterans was at 12.5%. Women veterans are the fastest growing veteran unemployment population.

This Veteran’s Day, when you see the poignant images of Arlington National Cemetery and other veteran monuments, don’t only think of those who died protecting our rights, but also those who are alive trying to find their way to the American Dream that they sacrificed for.
